Thanks to all those that attended this weekend’s welcome reception for admitted students of the Class of 2016.  I don’t know if we changed many of the hearts and minds of applicants (since most were already committed to the orange & black), but we certainly made the admits and their parents feel extremely comfortable with Princeton, honored and appreciated.  A special thank you again to Wyck Godfrey ’90 and Mary Kerr ’90 for hosting the event in their lovely home.

Join us at 7pm, May 3rd at the WGA as we recognize this year’s Princeton Prize winner, Caroline Wegner:

During all four of her high school years, Caroline Wegner has participated in (and now co-leads) the Student Diversity Leadership Club at La Jolla Country Day School.  Last year, after a swastika appeared on campus drawn by an anonymous student, Caroline helped organize a “Diversity Half-Day” with a theme addressing religious diversity.  This year, she helped organize a full-day “Diversity Day,” with a theme of confronting racial stereotypes.  For nearly two years she met weekly to plan these diversity events with first a committee of 12, and later a committee of 20.   The time commitment was considerable – 10 hours every weekend for three to four months.  It helps that she is extremely organized, adept at preparing scripts, workshops, activities, and time-lines.

Caroline is a strong-willed, pro-active risk taker who has challenged teachers who sought to back away from uncomfortable issues, and privileged students who’ve said “I’m not racist – diversity isn’t my issue.”   The speech she delivered at the MLK breakfast, talking about the difference between tolerance and acceptance, moved her entire campus.

Admission to the event is FREE.

One of the longest-standing mysteries in the behavioral and neurosciences is the ability of animals to navigate over long distances in unfamiliar territory.   We began work at Princeton over 30 years ago on the idea that animals might make tiny magnets in specialized cells that would give them the ability to use the geomagnetic field as a navigational tool.  I will report the latest, exciting findings in the general field of magnetoreception, as well as controversies and the possible presence of similar structures in humans.

The Gamble House

The Gamble House is an outstanding example of American Arts and Crafts style architecture. The house and furnishings were designed by Greene & Greene in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Proctor & Gamble Co. The Gamble House is a national historic landmark.

The tour is limited to the first 30 people who sign up.  Each registrant can bring one guest.

Lisa Herman Tofler ’88 planned PCSC’s event at the LAPD Training center last summer, with an incredble turnout.

This spring, Lisa has secured a section of tickets for PCSC members and guests to attend Cirque du Soleil’s “Iris” at the Kodak Theater on April 1, 2012. For more information about the performance visit Cirque du Soleil’s site.

Registration for tickets will open on Tuesday March 13 12:00 a.m. PST for PCSC members only. Members may bring up to 4 guests.

Tickets are $78.00 each (originally $133.00).

No limit on amount of tickets for PCSC members. Like most of Cirque du Soleil’s shows, IRIS is meant to entertain the whole family. Children must be 5 years or older to see IRIS. Please note that the show uses loud noises and periods of darkness which can frighten some children.

Tickets must be purchased by March 25th, 2012 11:59 p.m. PST.

Unfortunately, since tickets are purchased in blocks, we will not be able to refund tickets. Please make absolute sure you will be available to attend before purchasing the tickets.

We will meet at 5:00 p.m. at BoHo at the Hollywood/Highland complex. (www.bohorestaurant.com/home.html) You will receive your tickets at BoHo, and we will head to the Kodak Theater after a light dinner. If you are unable to meet the group 5:00 p.m., please contact secretary@princetonsocal.org, after you purchase your tickets.
